There has been some confusion surrounding our reading schedule with The Jungle. For the foreseeable future, all students will be responsible for reading 3 chapters of the book per class meeting. For example: Students in 7th period will need to have read chapters 1-4 by Friday. 2nd and 4th period students will need to have read chapters 1-4 by Monday. On Tuesday of next week, 7th period students will need to have read through the end of chapter 7. On Wednesday of next week, 2nd and 4th period students will need to have read through chapter 7 (and so on...) If this is confusing to you, please come speak to me immediately. Now, regarding double entry journals - all students were given an example sheet detailing the double entry journal process. All double entry journals must be typed and all must be turned in at the end of the quarter (date TBA). You will need to complete a minimum of one journal entry per chapter (31) plus another 9 journal entries from elsewhere in the book. This will bring the total of double entry journal entries to 40. The double entry journal is due at the end of the quarter and will represent 15% of your quarter grade. Please do not wait until the last minute to work on double entry journals. If you break this assignment into small pieces it will not ruin your social life. Attached you will find the PDF version of "The White Negro: Superficial Reflections of the Hipster" by Norman Mailer. I will be the first to admit that this essay is a challenging read. You will need to concentrate on Mailer's purpose throughout the essay in order to fully comprehend the essay's meaning. Mailer is not immune to criticism regarding this essay, be sure to read it with a critical eye. Thursday and Friday, APLAC students will be completing an in-class writing assignment associated wtih this essay. As a result, all students must make sure they have read the Mailer essay in its entirety by that time. APLAC will be operating on an irregular schedule this week due to a PSAT debrief from Mr. Oyan. For this reason, all APLAC students will need to complete reflections outside of class. Please check back with the website periodically in order to find the most updated information.
Please download and read the attached PDF. Once you have completed the reading, please post your response to the discussion question in the class forum. Due Tues/Wed.
After we read and discuss the themes present in the commencement speech delivered by Anna Quindlen, please post your reflections in the APLAC forum. The same rules apply - you need to post a 250 word reflection and reply to at least FOUR other posts. Forum postings are due no later than Thursday/Friday. |
